Pulmonology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the respiratory system, including the lungs and airways. Pulmonologists diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, lung cancer, and sleep-disordered breathing (such as sleep apnea). They utilize various diagnostic tests and procedures, such as pulmonary function tests, imaging studies (such as chest X-rays and CT scans), bronchoscopy, and sleep studies, to evaluate and treat patients. Pulmonologists may prescribe medications, recommend lifestyle modifications, and provide respiratory therapies (such as oxygen therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation) to improve patients' respiratory function and quality of life.
